Independent Practices - Representation, Location and History in Contemporary Visual Art - Publication
The experience of exile, central to the 20th Century, continues to mark our epoch. The phenomena of diaspora, migration and the refugee remain, whilst the experience of internal exile - the sense of not belonging - is even more widespread.
Within current critical debates around visual arts practice, however, there is a sense in which identity politics has to a large degree been exhausted.
Independent Practices addresses these themes in a fresh way through words and images by UK-based and international artists and writers, providing an informed and stimulating contribution to discourses around cultural practice and the notion of independence. Explorations of histories, both personal and political, are interwoven with more theoretical perspectives and a geographical spread that takes in the Indian Subcontinent, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and the UK.
